About the materials
Food-grade silicone meets the purity standards required for human food contact equipment — the same as your kitchen utensils and bakeware. There are no canine-specific studies on silicone because no one has tested it directly. What we do know: research published in peer-reviewed journals has confirmed that conventional plastic dog toys leach BPA and phthalates at detectable levels, with confirmed endocrine-disrupting activity. Food-grade silicone meets a stricter purity threshold than those plastics. We chose it on that basis.
FSC-certified natural rubber is free from the synthetic blends and plasticisers common in conventional rubber toys. Natural rubber has a long history of safe use — the distinction is sourcing and composition. Our rubber is certified by the Forest Stewardship Council, which verifies both sourcing standards and the absence of low-grade additives. Research has also confirmed that natural rubber toys reduce excitation behaviour with consistent use.
Coffee wood comes from retired coffee trees at the end of their productive life — no trees are cut down for the chew. It's cleaned, dried, and cut to size with no chemical treatment or synthetic hardening. The only ingredient is the wood itself. A peer-reviewed crossover study found long-lasting chews produce significantly lower arousal and higher positive emotional valence in dogs — the research supports the product, not just the instinct.
Yes. The vanilla scent is applied using documented food-safe compounds. Research confirms dogs prefer vanilla above other scents — it's an intentional design choice, not decorative. We hold the supplier safety documentation. If you'd like to see it, get in touch.
About the product
Yes. Every material in the edit is suitable from puppyhood. The feeder set and rubber ring can be introduced straight away. The coffee wood chew grows with your dog — introduce it once adult teeth are coming in, typically from 4 months, and supervise early sessions as you would with any chew.
The Foundational Edit includes a food-grade silicone lick mat, a food-grade silicone slow feeder, a coffee wood chew, an FSC-certified natural rubber ring, and a digital guide that walks you through each item — what it is, when to use it, and how to introduce it.
The chew comes in three sizes — S (up to 10kg), M (up to 20kg), and L (up to 40kg). If your dog is a strong or heavy chewer, size up. When in doubt, go larger.
Each item supports a natural daily behaviour. Research shows slow feeding extends meal duration up to fourfold, reduces cortisol, and decreases food-seeking and excitation behaviour. Peer-reviewed studies have found long-lasting chews produce lower arousal and measurably higher positive emotional valence — particularly during time alone. The lick mat supports focused, repetitive engagement that has a calming effect. The rubber ring provides an outlet for daily play and carrying instincts. These aren't enrichment for enrichment's sake — there's a body of research behind each one.
About the coffee wood chew
Coffee wood doesn't splinter the way conventional wood does. It's naturally dense — dogs gnaw at the surface and small fibrous flakes come off rather than sharp shards. The dog's saliva softens these pieces, making them flexible and digestible in small amounts. If larger pieces break off, remove them and supervise your dog while chewing, as you would with any chew.
That depends entirely on your dog. Light to moderate chewers can get months from a single piece. Heavy chewers will go through it faster. Replace it when it becomes small enough to be a choking risk — the same rule applies to any chew.
Yes. Regular gnawing on a hard natural surface reduces plaque and tartar buildup and keeps teeth and gums active. Studies on dental chews have shown meaningful reductions in calculus accumulation with consistent use. It's not a substitute for brushing, but it's a practical and research-supported daily addition.
Safety information
The products in the edit are designed for general use from puppyhood. However, all dogs are different. It is not recommended for power chewers. If your dog has any health conditions, allergies, or specific dietary requirements, check with your vet before introducing new products. Always supervise your dog with any new item, particularly in the first few sessions.
Introduce the coffee wood chew once adult teeth are coming in — typically from around 4 months. Always supervise chewing sessions, especially early on, and replace the chew when it becomes small enough to swallow.
No. Nothing on this site constitutes veterinary advice. If you have concerns about your dog's health, diet, or behaviour, always consult a qualified veterinarian. The guide and product information we provide is for general enrichment guidance only.
If your dog shows any sign of adverse reaction to any product — including digestive upset, allergic reaction, or unusual behaviour — stop use immediately and consult your vet. While all materials in the edit are chosen with safety in mind, individual dogs can respond differently to new products.
