There is no mandatory safety standard for dog toys or enrichment products in Australia. Any material can be used. Research published in Chemosphere confirmed that plastic dog toys and training devices leach BPA and phthalates — compounds with confirmed endocrine-disrupting activity. We chose our own filter instead.

I started looking for safe products for my dog before she even came home. I filled a cart. Then I stopped. Most of it was plastic. Cheap, disposable, mystery-blend plastic. The kind I'd already stopped buying for myself — and wouldn't put in my children's mouths.
So I went looking for answers. What I found was that there is no regulatory standard for what goes in your dog's mouth in Australia. No disclosure requirements. No obligation to tell you what a rubber blend contains, or what leaches when your dog chews it every single day. I also found the research. Peer-reviewed studies confirming that plastic dog toys leach BPA and phthalates — compounds with confirmed endocrine-disrupting activity.
